Minimally Invasive SurgeryMinimally invasive surgery has become the surgical standard for performing many common surgical procedures. Sometimes called laparoscopic surgery, keyhole surgery, or band-aid surgery, it is characterized by smaller incisions than those required for traditional open methods. Smaller incisions generally mean less trauma to your body resulting in less blood loss, less discomfort, and smaller scars. Patients usually spend a shorter time in hospital and can return to their normal activities faster after a minimally invasive procedure. Laparoscopic SurgeryPassing a long, flexible tube with a camera and light attached to it through a tiny incision, Dr. Bovard is able look at the surgical area on a video monitor. The tube is called an endoscope and can be used to look at an area or guide specialized surgical instruments during the operation. Depending on the operation, other small incisions may be necessary so that several surgical instruments can be used at the same time. The number and size of these incisions are specific to the type of surgery being performed. Advantages of Minimally Invasive Surgery
