Fundoplication for Gastroesophageal reflux diseaseGastroesophageal reflux disease, also known as GERD, results when stomach contents such as acid and bile flow backward into the tube that carries food from the moth to the stomach. This tube is called the esophagus and stomach contents are normally prevented from flowing back into it by the esophageal sphincter, a strong muscle at the junction of the esophagus and stomach. Most people have experienced the condition known as heartburn that results when the muscle occasionally malfunctions. If the esophageal sphincter does not work properly, heartburn or reflux becomes chronic and GERD may develop. Persistent reflux that occurs more than twice a week is considered GERD, and it can eventually lead to more serious health problems such as Barrett's esophagus, esophageal cancer, esophageal stricture, esophageal ulcers and can worsen asthma symptoms In situations where lifestyle change and medications do not control GERD, surgery may be required. The goal of surgery is to strengthen the lower esophageal sphincter. The standard surgical treatment for GERD is called fundoplication. Most comonly the Nissen fundoplication, is performed where the upper part of the stomach is wrapped around the lower esophageal sphincter to strengthen the sphincter, prevent acid reflux, and repair a hiatal hernia. Dr. Bovard uses minimally invasive surgery to treat GERD. |
